Bulk wood pellets

Bulk wood pellets come in a few different ways. The most common way being in a one ton canvas carrying sack on a pallet or skid from the mill. If you have a dry means to store wood pellet sacks by the ton in this manner than you may save just a few dollars from the typical 40lb plastic bags used.

Another way to store wood pellets in bulk is to install a mini silo and have a local bulk truck fill it once a year for you. Such bulk units are made of metal installed outside the dwelling while some other are installed indoors with a sack and rack method. Bulk services like this are very limited around the USA. With the silo in place, you would only need to dispense enough pellets for a daily fill of your wood pellet stove hopper or for the wood pellet boiler user there are also automatic feed auger systems to install between the wood pellet storage silo and boiler.

When storing pellets by bulk in a silo unit you should avoid any homemade clear plastic storage units like modified water tanks. Sunlight collected in such units and extremes in temperature change can cause condensation moisture within the bulk unit causing permanent damage to your bulk pellet purchase. A wet pellet is a no good pellet.

Some bulk wood pellets being sent overseas are exposed to the long sea air journey resulting in damage when arrived at port from the humidity.
